Sher-Gil started formally learning painting by Major Whitmarsh, and later by Beven Pateman. Amrita Sher-Gil lived a very privileged lifestyle in Shimla. Sher-Gil was expelled from her convent school because she declared herself to be an atheist. In 1923, her mother Marie came to know an Italian sculptor, who was living at Shimla at the time. In 1924, when the sculptor returned to Italy, Marie moved there along with Amrita and got her admission at Santa Annunziata, a popular art school in Florence. Amrita didn't stick around at this school for long and returned to India in the same year. It was at this art school where she was exposed to works of famous Italian painters and sculptors.

At the age of sixteen, Sher-Gil went to Europe with her mother to learn painting at Paris. She first studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under Pierre Vaillent and Lucien Simon. Later she went to École des Beaux-Arts. She took inspiration from popular European painters like Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin. She qalso took painting inspirations from her teacher Lucien Simon and artist friends and lovers like Tazlitsky.

The early paintings of Sher-Gil show a major influence of the Western modes of painting like the post-impressionism style. In the early 1930s Amrita practiced a lot in the Bohemian circles of Paris. She became popular with her 1932 oil painting, Young Girls for which she won many accolades, including a gold medal and election as an Associate of the Grand Salon in Paris in 1933. Amrita was the youngest ever member, and the only Asian to have received this recognition. Her work during her time at the Grand Salon in Paris include many self-portraits, life in Paris, nude studies, still life studied, and portraits of friends and fellow students. Her work was described by The National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi as "Capturing the artist in her many moods – somber, pensive, and joyous – while revealing a narcissistic streak in her personality."

In 1933, Sher-Gil was longing to return to India and returned to India at the end of 1934.

Dr. Victor Egan had helped Amrita obtain abortions twice prior to their marriage. Sher-Gil moved to India along with Dr. Victor Egan to stay at her paternal family's home in Saraya, Sardar nagar, Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. After she moved to India with her husband began her second phase of painting which was as great as the impact on Indian art with the likes of Rabindranath Tagore and Jamini Roy of the Bengal school of art.

Some of her popular art works include Tahitian (1937), Red Brick House (1938), Hill Scene (1938), and The Bride (1940). Her last art work was left unfinished due to her death in December 1941.
