Arvind Kejriwal Professional Life
Before starting his political career, Kejriwal was working with the Indian Revenue Service as a Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in New Delhi.
Arvind Kejriwal started working with the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) as an Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in 1995, after cracking the Civil Services Examination. Arvind Kejriwal was granted two years of paid leave
In November 2000, as he wanted to pursue higher education. The IRS had agreed on a condition that upon resuming back he would not be able to resign for at least three years. If he had to resign then he would have to pay back the salary given during the leave period. Kejriwal rejoined IRS in November 2002.
Kejriwal stated that After rejoining, he was not given any posting for almost a year, and kept getting his salary without doing any work and hence after 18 months he decided to apply for unpaid leave For 18 months which was sanctioned. Kejriwal decided to resign in February 2006 from his position as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax in New Delhi.
After his resignation the Government of India made a claim that Kejriwal had not kept his agreement with the government by not working for three years. Kejriwal made a statement in which he said that his 18 months of work and 18 months of unpaid leave amounted to the stipulated three-year period mentioned in the agreement and this was just an attempt to trouble him as he was involved with the Indian anti-corruption movement. This case ran in court for several years until, in 2011 the case was resolved and Kejriwal had to pay ₹ 927,787 as dues to the government which he took as loan from his friends. He stated that this should not be considered as an admission of fault.
After joining politics, Kejriwal claimed in 2013 that he had chosen public service over earning crores as an Income Tax Commissioner. This led to a controversy, with the IRS association pointing out that he has never been promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Income Tax.
In the 2013, Delhi Legislative Assembly elections BJP won 31 seats, followed by AAP who won 28 seats. In that years election Kejriwal defeated the former Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit of the Indian National Congress (INC) by a margin of 25,864 votes. After defeating Sheila Dixit, Kejriwal became the fifth most-mentioned Indian politician on social media channels in the run-up to the elections.
In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party to win a massive 67 seats of the 70 constituencies.That year BJP just won three seats and the INC won none. Kejriwal was again elected from the New Delhi constituency, this time he defeated Nupur Sharma by 31,583 votes. Kejriwal took his oath as the CM of Delhi on 14 February 2015 for a second time at Ramlila Maidan. After becoming the CM for the second time in row his party passed the Jan Lokpal Bill.
