Kamal Nath was elected as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh after the INC emerged as the single largest party with 114 seats. Kamal Nath became the 18th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and served as the CM for around 15 months starting 17 December 2018 and then resigned from the position on 20 March 2020 due to political issues like lack of majority in government. Kamal Nath is his tenure has been elected nine times from the Chhindwara Lok Sabha constituency of Madhya Pradesh.
He is the leader of the Indian National Congress in Madhya Pradesh and has worked as the Minister of Urban Development. n the Lok Sabha, Kamal Nath is one of the oldest and most senior members. In the 16th Lok Sabha, He was appointed the Pro Tem Speaker.
Kamal Nath was first elected to be a member of the 7th Lok Sabha in 1980. He was then consecutively re-elected to the 8th, 9th and the 10th Lok Sabha. He was part of the Union Council of Ministers as Union Minister of State of Environment and Forests in June 1991 and served as Union Minister of State of Textiles from 1995 to 1996.
He was again elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998, 13th Lok Sabha in 1999 and the 14th Lok Sabha in the 2004. Nath was the General Secretary of the Indian National Congress (INC) From 2001 to 2004. He was appointed as the Union Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Industry from 2004 to 2009.
Kamal Nath won the 2009 Lok sabha election from his constituency and was part of the 15th Lok Sabha. He was also part of the Cabinet as the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways. In 2011, Nath became the Minister of Urban Development as a result of a cabinet reshuffle.
In October 2012 Nath was made the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs along with his current role as Minister of Urban Development.
Nath replaced Pranab Mukherjee to help the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government win a crucial debate on foreign direct investment in India (FDI) in late 2012. Nath went on to replace Jairam Ramesh the Minister of Rural Development to become the ex officio member of the Planning Commission in December 2012.
