Premchand was fascinated by books since he was a child and he sought comfort in reading fiction. As a child He used to hear the stories from the Persian-language fantasy epic Tilism-e-Hoshruba at a tobacconist's shop. When he was young He started working at a book wholesaler selling books. As only the students with first division were given fee concession. He didn't get admission at the Central Hindu College because of his poor mathematical skills. Failing to get an admission he chose to discontinue his studies. After discontinuing his studies He got an assignment to coach an advocate's son in Benares for which he received a monthly salary of five rupees. While he was coaching the advocate's son He would reside in a small hut made of mud over the advocate's stables. Premchand used to send 60% of his salary back home to his family. While in Benares Premchand read a lot of books. in 1899, Premchand went to a book shop to sell one of his collected books where he met the headmaster of a missionary school at Chunar, who offered premchand a job of a teacher.
