In 1972 when he was 13 years of age he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. In the year 1975 he was the youngest RSS volunteer who was imprisoned during Emergency. In 1991 in his career he was chosen as a Member of Parliament for the first time in 10th Lok Sabha from Vidisha Constituency. In the year 1990 he was first chosen to the State Assembly from Budhni Constituency. Shivraj Singh Chouhan is famous and well known for his women welfare and empowerment schemes. Gaon ki Beti Yojana, Medhavi Vidhyati Yojan, Medhavi Chhatra Yojna, Janani Suraksha evam Janani Prasav Yojana, Swagatam Laxmi Yojana, Usha Kiran Yojana, Tejaswini, One Stop Crisis Center, Lado Abhiyaan and lots more are the major schemes as CM at his tenure.
In 1978 he became Joint-Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad Madhya Pradesh. He was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for 3 times from November 29, 2005 to December 16, 2018. He has worked as a general secretary and president to Madhya Pradesh state as a Leader of BJP. He has also worked as the general secretary of the BJP and the president of the party's MP unit. He has wored as a 5 time Member of Parliament between 1991 to 2006 having represented Vidisha in the Lok Sabha.
